The World’s Most Epic Day Hikes

By on September 12, 2018

The world is full of adventures, places to explore and sights to discover. Yet, the best thing about travelling is to be active, to surround yourself with nature and stunning views. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, no worries. Because once you see the what incredible hikes the world has in store for you, you’ll understand.

1. Blyde River Canyon, South Africa | Epic Day Hikes

Places you never thought to visit - Blyde River Canyon

Near the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa lies the third largest canyon in the world famous for its natural wonders such as the Three Rondavels, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window. Though there are various hiking trails in the canyon, our favourite one is the Hippo Trail. This 18 kilometer hike is the perfect one day hike. Make sure to start early though as you want get to the end of the trail before it gets dark (it gets dark early in South Africa and you don’t want to meet a hippo after sunset).

2. Volcano Lascar, Chile | Epic Day Hikes

Volcano Lascar in Chile - Epic Day Hikes

Located only 70 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama in Northern Chile lies the most active volcano in South America. The surrounding landscape is unreal, making you feel you’re on another planet. You can hike the 5,593 meters high volcano in one day although it’s essential to get used to the altitude before you go. Take altitude sickness tablets and go with a guide if you’re an unexperienced hiker.

3. Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland | Epic Day Hikes

One of the most epic day hikes is through waterfall valley in Lauterbrunnen.

In the heart of Europe you can find one of the most beautiful routes in the word – the Waterfall Route in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. This route covers a valley of 72 waterfalls between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. The best thing about it is that you can do it by foot! It’s an easy 9 kilometer hike that will bring you along the most stunning spots (don’t forget your camera).

4. Congost de Mont Rebei, Spain | Epic Day Hikes

Located only 2,5 hours drive from Barcelona you can find one of the most beautiful gorges in Europe. Start your hike at Corçà and follow GR-1 to Pont de Muntanya. This 12 kilometer hike will bring you through the mountains and along the edge of the gorge. It’s truly an amazing experience. The best things about Congost de Mont Rebei is that is hasn’t been affected by modern infrastructure and has no roads or electricity lines (there are also no water taps so make sure to bring a few liters). Pack your swimming suit as well for a dip in the water!

5. Rainbow Mountain, Peru | Epic Day Hikes

Places you never thought to visit - Rainbow Mountain Peru

A few hours from Cusco in Peru you will find the most colourful mountains you will ever see (hence the name: Rainbow Mountain). The mountain range isn’t only absolutely stunning, the whole area is. The hike there brings you through green valleys full of alpacas with rough snowy mountain peaks in the distance. Make sure to start early as the weather can change in a split second from sunny to heavy rain and even snow. The easiest way to get there is by booking a tour (which is really cheap) from Cusco which drives you there at 3AM and returns in the afternoon.

6. Quilotoa Lake, Ecuador | Epic Day Hikes

Quilotoa crater hike is one of the most epic day hikes in Ecuador

In Ecuador you can have the unique experience of hiking a crater rim. The large crater of Quilotoa is home to a breathtaking turquoise lagoon (which is 240 metres deep) that you can reach from hiking inside the crater. The day hike is 12 kilometers of up and down trekking that can be tough – especially because of the altitude of 3570 meters. If you’re looking for a longer hike check out the Quilotoa loop, this trek brings you along the villages and surrounding areas too and takes 3 to 4 days.

7. Ella Rock, Sri Lanka | Epic Day Hikes

Epic Day Hike to Ella Rock, Sri Lanka

In the middle of tea plantations, fairytale waterfalls and breathtaking mountains lies Ella Rock. A place you can hike up to in a few hours that will give you an amazing view over the cute town of Ella. The hike starts at the train station and even though most people walk along the train tracks (which is easy) go on an adventure and take the small little roads. If you get lost there are enough locals who would love to guide you the way, which is more than worth a few dollars.

8. Mt Fuji, Japan | Epic Day Hikes

Epic Day Hikes - Mt Fuji Japan

A must do in Japan is to climb one of the country’s most famous landmarks: Mt Fuji. Japan’s highest and most prominent mountain is covered in snow for most of the year but can be climbed from early July to Mid September. The hike is divided in 10 stations and the best thing to do is to make it up to station 6 or 7 in the evening to get to the top for sunrise the next day. The hike is very popular amongst tourist as well as locals so don’t expect to be the only one out there!
